Farringdon Chambers Hosts "Making Crime Pay" Seminar on Legal Aid Billing
Farringdon Chambers was delighted to welcome colleagues from across the profession to our seminar on Friday, Making Crime Pay: How to Maximise Litigator Legal Aid Billing, held at our Bermondsey Street offices.
The talk was delivered by Martin McCarthy KC, joint head of chambers and head of our Business/Financial Crime team. Martin is a leading authority on criminal costs appeals to the Costs Court and the High Court, and has appeared in many of the most significant recent costs decisions — spanning PPE, trials, Newton hearings, stayed indictments and case categorisation. He is currently instructed on an appeal by the Lord Chancellor concerning PPE formatting, and previously served as an Independent Costs Adjudicator for the Legal Aid Agency.
Drawing on this experience, Martin gave attendees a practical, up-to-date guide to maximising litigator billing under the Legal Aid scheme — covering the latest case law on Trials, pages of prosecution evidence (PPE) and electronic PPE, how courts are approaching Newton hearings, and the practical steps litigators can take to ensure their claims are properly and fairly remunerated.
The evening was a valuable opportunity for litigators and costs practitioners to hear directly from one of the field's most experienced voices, followed by food, drinks and further discussion.
