Justin Ko (Probationary Tenant)

Justin has experience defending in the Youth Court, Magistrates’ Court, and Crown Court. His practice covers all areas of criminal law, including violent, sexual, weapon, driving, public order and dishonesty offences. He also has experience representing young and vulnerable defendants.

Career Overview

Justin obtained his LLB from the University of Bristol. He then completed the Bar Course with distinction at BPP University, Bristol.

Prior to joining the Criminal Bar, Justin worked as a paralegal at the Crown Prosecution Service for 9 months, where he assisted experienced Prosecution advocates, managed caseloads, and provided support to witnesses during trials.

Justin represents clients in the Youth, Magistrates’ and Crown Court and has an established record of success in his matters. Justin also appears in the Court of Appeal and has recently successfully defended an Attorney General’s Reference against experienced Treasury Counsel.

Justin is an unusual advocate. He delivers powerful closing speeches, specifically tailored to the audience he finds himself before. He is a popular advocate with clients and juries and is extremely likeable with clients.

Justin is also a CPS Grade 1 Prosecutor. 

Notable Cases

R v JT:

-Acquittal of a youth defendant charged with Assault against an Emergency Worker at Willesden Youth Court

R v KB:

-Acquittal of a defendant charged with domestic assault by beating against his former partner at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court.

R v DA:

-Unanimous acquittals of a high-profile defendant within the deaf community charged with 4 counts of breaching a non-molestation order, following a 6-day trial at Inner London Crown Court. The trial involved complex courtroom procedures and special measures as both the Defendant and Complainant were deaf and required British Sign Language Interpreters throughout.

R v Lupu (Mihail):

-Successful defence in an Attorney General’s Reference in the Court of Appeal before Lord Justice Dingemans, Lady Justice Whipple and His Honour Thackray KC. Justin persuaded the Court that the sentence imposed on the Respondent was not unduly lenient. It is of note that Justin appeared on behalf of the Respondent at the original sentencing hearing, at which the sentencing Judge reduced the Respondent’s sentence from the starting point of 60 months to 36 months’ imprisonment following Justin’s plea in mitigation.
